How to reset iLO Administrator password of HP Server (HPONCFG)

Ever wondered how to reset the  forgotten password of HP iLO? Did you lost the iLO tag which was attached to the server and do not know how to reset the iLO password ? Or your Server administrator suddenly left the organization and you are left with bunch of HP Server without passwords? Are you are stuck like me? No problem, I think I can try to help you here :)

I wanted to reset the iLO password of our HP Proliant DL360p Gen8 Server; simply because I could not remember the password I have set :D . This server was installed with Windows Operating System and was in Production, I do not want to turn OFF the server and use the System Maintenance switch (iLO Security Override Switch) available on the Server system board. After researching on this issue, I found that HP Lights-Out Online Configuration Utility allow us to reset the iLO Administrator password without rebooting the HP Proliant Server.

HP Lights-Out Online Configuration Utility (HPONCFG.exe utility) is a tool which allows you to configure iLO from the host operating system. It means, if you wish to configure iLO while you have logged in to the server operating system, you can use this tool to configure iLO. This simple GUI based tool makes iLO configuration an easy task.

If you forget the Administrator user name and password of iLO, we can launch HP Lights-Out Online Configuration Utility (HPONCFG.exe) and reset the password. Always remember that HP Lights-Out Online Configuration Utility does not ask for any password when you launch it. Moreover, when you reset the iLO password, HPONCFG will not ask for the previous password.  Looks easy, right? :D

Now, let us go ahead and check how exactly we can reset the password of iLO without rebooting the server. Remember that this is just one way of resetting iLO password, you have numerous ways to to reset password on your HP Proliant Servers. This method will work for any HP servers which uses iLO2, iLO3  and iLO4.

As I am using Windows 2008 R2 on our DL360p Gen8 server, I will be using the Windows based HP Lights-out online configuration utility. If your server is running Linux, then below provided steps will not apply. In short, this article will help you to reset the forgotten iLO administrator if your server is running Windows operating system.

Where can I download HPONCFG?

First we need to download the HP Lights out online configuration utility (HPONCFG)  from HP.com website. You can download this tool from the driver download page of your Server (Select Windows as your OS).  The driver download page of your HP Proliant server will look like the screenshot provided below.

If you could not find this tool at the driver download page of your server, then you may click the link provided here. Once you download HPONCFG (HP Lights-Out Online Configuration Utility) on your server, please install it.

For the proper function of HPONCFG, you will also need to install both iLO drivers (HP ProLiant Channel Interface Device Driver and HP ProLiant iLO Management Controller Driver). If these drivers are not installed, you may face issues with HPONCFG utility (HP Lights-Out Online Configuration Utility).

How to reset the forgotten iLO Password?

1. Click Start, HP System Tools and launch HP Lights-Out Online Configuration Utility.

2. HP Lights-Out Online Configuration Utility will be open now.
3. Click on User tab in HP Lights-Out Online Configuration Utility (shown below).

4. User Accounts tab will list all the user accounts created for the iLO.
5. Select Administrator user account and click on View/Modify button (shown below).

6. Now put a check mark to Change Password option (shown below)

7. Enter the new password of your choice, then click on Apply button (shown below).

8. You will receive a message stating “User Settings were modified Successfully”.
9.Click on OK message.

10. You have successfully changed the password of Administrator user account now.
11. Click on Summary tab and note down the iLO IP address.

12. Here, the iLO IP address is 12.64.53.1.
13. In your laptop, open a web browser and enter the iLO IP address at the address bar of browser.
14. This will open the iLO Login page of your HP Proliant Server.

15. Now use the new password to login to the iLO.
16. You did it ( Now you can sing the song “Oops!… I Did It Again”) :D :D :D
