I returned from vacation to find backup errors on an SBS 2008 customer\u2019s server. The error message was: \u201cFailed \u2013 There is not enough space on the disk\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kwsupport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/image.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/kwsupport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/image_thumb.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"244\" height=\"189\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So, I hunted around for a solution to get things running, and here\u2019s what I found that worked for me. What we will be doing is to manually delete the oldest shadow partition(s) from the USB drive, thus making room for newer backups. Here\u2019s the process we will follow:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Temporarily assign a drive letter to your USB drive being used for backup<\/li>\n<li>Use the DiskShadow utility to delete the oldest shadow partition(s) to free up enough disk space<\/li>\n<li>Remove the temporary drive letter assignment<\/li>\n<li>Rerun the backup<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>So, let\u2019s get started:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open up Disk Management (<em><strong>Start<\/strong><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u2013&gt;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><strong>Run<\/strong><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u2013&gt;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><strong>DiskMgmt.msc<\/strong><\/em>)<\/li>\n<li>Right click on the USB Drive being used for backups, then click<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><strong><em>Change Drive Letter and Paths<br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Remember: by default, the USB drive being used for SBS Backups is generally hidden.<br \/>\nWe can, however, assign a drive letter<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">temporarily<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>to make room on the drive.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/li>\n<li>I mounted my USB drive to X:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/kwsupport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/image1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/kwsupport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/image_thumb1.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"244\" height=\"77\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Keep the disk Management window open, as you will be needing it.<\/li>\n<li>Next, open up a command prompt with administrator rights\n<ol>\n<li>Type:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><strong>diskshadow<\/strong><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>and press enter<\/li>\n<li>Type:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><strong>delete shadows OLDEST x:<\/strong><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>and press enter<\/li>\n<li>Repeat the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em>delete shadows<\/em><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>command several time until you have freed up enough disk spac<\/li>\n<li>Then close the command prompt window<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/kwsupport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/image2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/kwsupport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/image_thumb2.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"244\" height=\"113\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Return to the Disk Management window, click Change Drive Letter and Paths\u2026 and remove the drive letter assignment.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nNote: removing the drive letter may take a few minutes, so do not panic!<\/li>\n<li>Next, rerun your scheduled backup, and hopefully your backup will successfully complete!<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/kwsupport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/image3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/kwsupport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/image_thumb3.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"244\" height=\"58\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Finally, you will find some helpful information in this<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.technet.com\/b\/filecab\/archive\/2009\/06\/22\/backup-version-and-space-management-in-windows-server-backup.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">blog post from the Microsoft Storage Team<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>on backups and space management for Windows Server 2008\/2008R2.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Not Enough Disk Space SBS 2008 Backup By\u00a0KW AUG052013 http:\/\/kwsupport.com\/2013\/08\/not-enough-disk-space-sbs-2008-backup\/ My normal experience is that the built in backup for SBS 2008 generally just works \u2026 that is, until now.
