{"id":1642,"date":"2015-12-21T16:38:10","date_gmt":"2015-12-21T21:38:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/swildow.darktech.org\/wp\/?p=1642"},"modified":"2015-12-21T16:38:10","modified_gmt":"2015-12-21T21:38:10","slug":"how-to-disable-the-shutdown-tracker-in-windows-server-2008-r2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wildow.com\/blog\/?p=1642","title":{"rendered":"How To disable the Shutdown Tracker in Windows Server 2008 R2"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header single\">\n<h1 class=\"entry-title\">How To disable the Shutdown Tracker in Windows Server 2008 R2<\/h1>\n<p><br class=\"star-1\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content single\">\n<p>I use a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine that is installed on my Lenovo W510 laptop to do demonstrations almost every day.\u00a0 Normally I would recommend that you leave your servers running all the time, however in this case I have a limitation of battery life that does not allow that practice and so I end up shutting the server down almost every day.\u00a0 As you are aware when you shut down Windows Server 2008 R2 there is a cool feature that prompts you for a reason why you are shutting down the server.\u00a0 The feature is called the Shutdown Event Tracker.\u00a0 Again normally I love the shutdown tracker because it provides historical context to the reasons for shutting down a server.\u00a0 In my case it is an annoyance that slows the process of shut down.\u00a0 So the question is how do you disable the shutdown event tracker?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>1.\u00a0 Open Group Policy editor.\u00a0 You could use MMC and add the local group policy snap in or you can simply click on Start and then type gpedit.msc.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/msdnshared.blob.core.windows.net\/media\/TNBlogsFS\/prod.evol.blogs.technet.com\/CommunityServer.Blogs.Components.WeblogFiles\/00\/00\/00\/46\/64\/metablogapi\/6724.shutdown%20tracker%20gp.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"shutdown tracker gp\" src=\"https:\/\/msdnshared.blob.core.windows.net\/media\/TNBlogsFS\/prod.evol.blogs.technet.com\/CommunityServer.Blogs.Components.WeblogFiles\/00\/00\/00\/46\/64\/metablogapi\/7317.shutdown%20tracker%20gp_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"shutdown tracker gp\" width=\"507\" height=\"356\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>2. Navigate to Computer Configuration \/ Administrative Templates \/ System<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>3. Find the setting called \u201cDisplay Shutdown Event Tracker\u201d You will have to scroll down a little to get past the containers of settings and then find it.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/msdnshared.blob.core.windows.net\/media\/TNBlogsFS\/prod.evol.blogs.technet.com\/CommunityServer.Blogs.Components.WeblogFiles\/00\/00\/00\/46\/64\/metablogapi\/1513.shutdown%20tracker%201.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"shutdown tracker 1\" src=\"https:\/\/msdnshared.blob.core.windows.net\/media\/TNBlogsFS\/prod.evol.blogs.technet.com\/CommunityServer.Blogs.Components.WeblogFiles\/00\/00\/00\/46\/64\/metablogapi\/7444.shutdown%20tracker%201_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"shutdown tracker 1\" width=\"511\" height=\"359\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>4. Double click \u201cDisplay Shutdown Event Tracker\u201d\u00a0 This will open the settings for the policy.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/msdnshared.blob.core.windows.net\/media\/TNBlogsFS\/prod.evol.blogs.technet.com\/CommunityServer.Blogs.Components.WeblogFiles\/00\/00\/00\/46\/64\/metablogapi\/7848.shutdown%20tracker3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"shutdown tracker3\" src=\"https:\/\/msdnshared.blob.core.windows.net\/media\/TNBlogsFS\/prod.evol.blogs.technet.com\/CommunityServer.Blogs.Components.WeblogFiles\/00\/00\/00\/46\/64\/metablogapi\/2543.shutdown%20tracker3_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"shutdown tracker3\" width=\"511\" height=\"469\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>5.\u00a0 Because the policy says \u201cDisplay Shutdown Event tracker\u201d its default behavior when not configured is to display the tracker.\u00a0 We want it to go away so we will select the radio button to \u201cDisable\u201d the setting.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>6. Click OK, then close the local group policy editor.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>And there you have it!
