It also makes a difference if Outlook  is installed on  the same machine or not. In addition to mail this  guide will also discuss how  you can migrate your contacts and calendar.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.howto-outlook.com\/howto\/migratefromoewlm.htm#same_computer\">Outlook is located on the same computer<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.howto-outlook.com\/howto\/migratefromoewlm.htm#migrate_mail\">Migrate Mail<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.howto-outlook.com\/howto\/migratefromoewlm.htm#migrate_contacts\">Migrate Contacts<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.howto-outlook.com\/howto\/migratefromoewlm.htm#migrate_calendar\">Migrate Calendar<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.howto-outlook.com\/howto\/migratefromoewlm.htm#another_computer\">Outlook is located on another computer<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.howto-outlook.com\/howto\/migratefromoewlm.htm#files_only\">You only have the message store files from OE, WM  \tor WLM<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.howto-outlook.com\/howto\/migratefromoewlm.htm#additional_notes\">Additional Notes<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this guide;<br \/>\nOE is used to refer to Outlook Express,<br \/>\nWM is used to refer to Windows Mail,<br \/>\nWLM is used to refer to Windows Live Mail,<br \/>\nOutlook is used to refer to Microsoft Office Outlook.<\/p>\n<p><em>Note: If you are using a Windows Live Hotmail account, then most  of these  steps are not needed since these accounts store their data on  the Windows Live  Hotmail servers. To configure Outlook directly with  your Windows Live Hotmail  account, use the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/downloads\/details.aspx?familyid=9a2279b1-df0a-46e1-aa93-7d4870871ecf\" target=\"_blank\"> Outlook Connector<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a name=\"same_computer\"><\/a>Outlook is located on the same computer<\/h3>\n<p>In this scenario OE, WM or WLM contains all your messages and is  located on  the same machine as Outlook. It is assumed that Outlook has  already been  installed and configured with your mail account. Contact  your mail administrator  or ISP if you do not know the mail account  settings. If you&#8217;ve already tried to  configure Outlook before but were  not successful, you&#8217;ll have to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.howto-outlook.com\/faq\/newprofile.htm\">start with a clean  mail profile<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"migrate_mail\"><\/a>Migrate Mail<\/h4>\n<p>Don&#8217;t use the Import function from within Outlook to migrate your  mail. In many cases this will  reset the &#8220;Received&#8221; time and date on a  message. Instead, use the  export function from with OE, WM or WLM.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open Outlook.<\/li>\n<li>Open up OE, WM or WLM and use File-&gt; Export-&gt; Messages\u2026 to export the  \tmessages to Outlook.<br \/>\nConfirm the dialog and select which folder you would like to export to  \tOutlook.<\/li>\n<li>Now all you have to do is wait. This could take quite a while depending  \ton how big your message store in OE, WM or WLM is.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4><a name=\"migrate_contacts\"><\/a>Migrate Contacts<\/h4>\n<p>To migrate your contacts, you first have to export it to a csv-file which you  can then import into Outlook.<br \/>\nThe way to export it defers slightly depending on whether you are using OE, WM  or WLM.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Export Contacts Outlook Express<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>File-&gt; Export-&gt; Address Book\u2026<\/li>\n<li>Select; Text File (Comma Separated Values).<\/li>\n<li>Press the Export button.<\/li>\n<li>Select a location to store the export in and name you export file.<br \/>\nThis can be on your Desktop folder for easy access. You can remove the file  \tonce everything has been imported into Outlook.<\/li>\n<li>Press the Next button.<\/li>\n<li>Select all the fields (make sure you scroll down to see all fields)<\/li>\n<li>Press Finish. You&#8217;ll get notified when the export is done.<\/li>\n<li>Close the remaining open dialogs and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.howto-outlook.com\/howto\/migratefromoewlm.htm#import_contacts\">continue  \tto the Import Contacts<\/a> section.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Export Contacts Windows Mail<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>File-&gt; Export-&gt; Windows Contacts\u2026<\/li>\n<li>Select; CSV (Comma Separated Values).<\/li>\n<li>Press the Export button.<\/li>\n<li>Select a location to store the export in and name you export file.<br \/>\nThis can be on your Desktop folder for easy access. You&#8217;ll get notified when the export is done.<\/li>\n<li>Close the remaining open dialogs and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.howto-outlook.com\/howto\/migratefromoewlm.htm#import_contacts\">continue  \tto the Import Contacts<\/a> section.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Export Contacts Windows Live Mail<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Select the Contacts button in the left bottom section or press  \tCTRL+SHIFT+C to bring up the Windows Live Contacts window.<\/li>\n<li> File-&gt; Export-&gt; Comma Separated Values (.CSV)<\/li>\n<li>Select a location to store the export in and name you export file.<br \/>\nThis can be on your Desktop folder for easy access. You can remove the file  \tonce everything has been imported into Outlook.<\/li>\n<li>Press the Next button.<\/li>\n<li>Select all the fields (make sure you scroll down to see all fields).<\/li>\n<li>Press Finish. You&#8217;ll get notified when the export is done.<\/li>\n<li>Close the remaining open dialogs and continue to the \t<a href=\"http:\/\/www.howto-outlook.com\/howto\/migratefromoewlm.htm#import_contacts\">Import Contacts<\/a> section.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><a name=\"import_contacts\"><\/a>Import Contacts Outlook<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>File-&gt; Import and Export\u2026<\/li>\n<li>Select; Import from another program or file.<\/li>\n<li>Press the Next button.<\/li>\n<li>Select; Comma Separated Values (Windows).<\/li>\n<li>Press the Next button.<\/li>\n<li>Browse to the location of the previously exported csv-file.<\/li>\n<li>Press the Next button.<\/li>\n<li>Select your Contacts folder as the destination folder.<\/li>\n<li>Press the Next button.<\/li>\n<li>Press Finish.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><a name=\"migrate_calendar\"><\/a>Migrate Calendar<\/h3>\n<p>Both Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail have a calendar function of which the  contents can be migrated to Outlook.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Export Calendar Windows Mail<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Press the Windows Calendar button in Windows Mail or start Windows  \tCalendar from the Start Menu.<\/li>\n<li>Select the calendar you wish to export.<\/li>\n<li>Choose; File-&gt; Export\u2026<\/li>\n<li>Select a location to store the export in and name you export file.<br \/>\nThis can be on your Desktop folder for easy access. You can remove the file  \tonce everything has been imported into Outlook.<\/li>\n<li>Press the Save button.<\/li>\n<li>Repeat the above steps for additional calendar you wish to migrate if  \tneeded and then <a href=\"http:\/\/www.howto-outlook.com\/howto\/migratefromoewlm.htm#import_calendar\">continue to the Import Calendar<\/a> section.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Export Calendar Windows Live Mail<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Make sure you login with your Windows Live ID to Windows Live Mail.<br \/>\nYou&#8217;ll either see your logged in ID in the left top corner or a button  \tcalled Sign In.<\/li>\n<li>Once logged in, your calendar will sync to the online Windows Live  \tCalendar.<\/li>\n<li>Login to Windows Live Calendar via \t<a href=\"http:\/\/calendar.live.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/calendar.live.com<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Select; Share-&gt; <em>calendar name you wish to export<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Select; Share this calendar<\/li>\n<li>Select; Send friends a view-only link to your calendar<\/li>\n<li>If you don&#8217;t see any links yet press: &#8220;Get your calendar links&#8221;<br \/>\nPress OK to confirm the sharing confirmation popup.<\/li>\n<li>Press the ICS link called; &#8220;Import into another calendar application&#8221;<br \/>\nYou&#8217;ll now get a dialog with a link starting with &#8220;webcal:\/\/&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Copy this link without the webcal:\/\/ part and paste it into the  address  \tbar of Internet Explorer (or any other web browser you might  be using to do  \tthis).<br \/>\nPress Enter to execute the link.<\/li>\n<li>You&#8217;ll now get prompted to save the ics-file.<br \/>\nSelect a location to store the export in and name you export file.<br \/>\nThis can be on your Desktop folder for easy access. You can remove the file  \tonce everything has been imported into Outlook.<\/li>\n<li>Repeat the above steps for any additional calendar you wish to migrate if  \tneeded and then <a href=\"http:\/\/www.howto-outlook.com\/howto\/migratefromoewlm.htm#import_calendar\">continue to the Import Calendar<\/a> section.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><a name=\"import_calendar\"><\/a>Import Calendar Outlook<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>File-&gt; Import and Export\u2026<\/li>\n<li>Select; Import an iCalendar (.ics) or vCalendar file (.vcs)<\/li>\n<li>Press the Next button.<\/li>\n<li>Browse to the location of the previously exported ics-file.<\/li>\n<li>Press OK.<\/li>\n<li>Repeat the above steps for any additional calendars that you might have  \texported.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><a name=\"another_computer\"><\/a>Outlook is located on another computer<\/h3>\n<p>In this scenario OE, WM or WLM contains all your messages and is not  located  on the same machine as Outlook. This makes things a bit more  tricky as somewhere  a conversion must take place.<\/p>\n<p>There are 2 options available;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Install Outlook on the old machine as well and use the above  \tinstructions to get everything into Outlook.<br \/>\nAfter this, backup Outlook on the old machine and restore it to the new  \tmachine as described in  \t<a href=\"http:\/\/www.howto-outlook.com\/howto\/backupandrestore.htm\">this guide<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Move the entire message store from OE, WM or WLM and reconfigure it with  \tOE, WM or WLM on the new machine.<br \/>\nAfter this, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.howto-outlook.com\/howto\/migratefromoewlm.htm#same_computer\">use the instructions above<\/a> to get  \teverything into Outlook.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If you choose the first option, note that there is no need to  activate  Office\/Outlook on the old machine. It will install in a fully  functional trial  mode then which allows you to go through this process.  If your new computer came  pre-installed with Outlook and\/or you don&#8217;t  have an Office installation CD, then you can also download a trial of  Office  Standard <a href=\"http:\/\/us20.trymicrosoftoffice.com\/product.aspx?sku=3082907jQ\" target=\"_blank\"> here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you choose the second option, then you&#8217;ll have to locate and backup your  Store Folder of OE, WM or WLM. To do this choose;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>OE: Tools-&gt; Options\u2026-&gt; tab Maintenance-&gt; button Store Folder\u2026<br \/>\nWM and WLM: Tools-&gt; Options\u2026-&gt; tab Advanced-&gt; button Maintenance\u2026-&gt;  \tbutton Store Folder\u2026<\/li>\n<li>Copy the path in the dialog you see now (select the text with your mouse  \tand choose CTRL+C).<\/li>\n<li>Open Windows Explorer to browse your computer and paste the location in  \tthe address bar at the top (CTRL+V).<br \/>\nPress Enter to open the folder.<\/li>\n<li>Select all the files and folders from that location and store them  to a  \tbackup location such as a CD\/DVD, external hard disk or USB Flash  Drive.<\/li>\n<li>Continue to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.howto-outlook.com\/howto\/migratefromoewlm.htm#files_only\">&#8220;You only have the message store  \tfiles&#8221;<\/a> section.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><a name=\"files_only\"><\/a>You only have the message store files from OE, WM  or WLM<\/h3>\n<p>In this scenario, you have the entire message store from OE, WM or  WLM  on your hard disk or a backup medium. In order to get that data  into Outlook,  you must first configure that data with OE, WM or WLM  again before you can  import it into Outlook.<\/p>\n<p>Note:<br \/>\nIf your message store is from OE, then you can use OE, WM or WLM on your Outlook  machine to restore it.<br \/>\nIf your message store is from WM, then you can use WM or WLM on your Outlook  machine to restore it.<br \/>\nIf your message store is from WLM, then you can use only WLM on your Outlook  machine to restore it.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Copy the contents of your backup to a folder on your new  \tcomputer.<br \/>\nThis can be a folder location on your Desktop for easy access. You  can  \tremove the file once everything has been imported into Outlook.<\/li>\n<li>Right click the folder and choose Properties.
