In the past we used to use a script, but there is a group policy setting that can save us the scripting effort.<\/p>\n<p><em>Note: this is part of our ongoing series teaching IT administration basics, and might not apply to everybody.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Mapping Network Drives Using Group Policy<\/h3>\n<p>Open the Group Policy Management Console by searching for it from the Start Menu.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"sshot-26\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/sshot-261.png\" width=\"438\" height=\"487\" border=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll want to drill down into your domain until you reach the Machines object, where you can right-click and choose to Create a GPO.<\/p>\n<p><em>Note: Although the OU in our example is called the Machines OU it also contains\u00a0<\/em><em>some users. The Group Policy Setting that allows you to map drives is a User setting and is therefore assigned at logon, this means that the OU that you tie the GPO to should contain Users rather than only computers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"sshot-4\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/sshot-41.png\" width=\"650\" height=\"467\" border=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We have to give our new policy a name, we will name ours Mapped Drives (General).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"sshot-5\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/sshot-52.png\" width=\"432\" height=\"215\" border=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now we can right click on the policy and choose edit.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"sshot-6\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/sshot-62.png\" width=\"650\" height=\"466\" border=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The policy that controls mapped drives is located at<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>User Configuration\\Preferences\\Drive Maps<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We need to select the policy and right click in the white space and select new mapped drive.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"sshot-7\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/sshot-72.png\" width=\"650\" height=\"476\" border=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Change the action to create, and type a location for your shared folder.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"sshot-8\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/sshot-82.png\" width=\"441\" height=\"487\" border=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now set the label, this is the name that will appear on the drive in my computer.
