How to Repair MDAC 2.8 Under Windows XP SP2\/SP3<\/h1>\n

Windows XP with Service Pack 2 or 3 contains MDAC version 2.81, which is currently not<\/em> available for download at the Microsoft Web site as a standalone installation. If you try to install MDAC 2.8<\/em>, which is the latest available standalone download of MDAC, you will receive a message that you already have a newer version of MDAC installed. Therefore, under Windows XP SP2\/SP3, you must manually repair MDAC 2.81 as outlined below.<\/p>\n

How to Repair MDAC 2.81 under Windows XP with SP2 or SP3<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
1.<\/td>\nIn Windows Explorer, open the c:\\Windows\\Inf folder.Note<\/strong>If you cannot see the c:\\Windows\\Inf folder, follow these steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
a.<\/td>\nOn the desktop, double-click My Computer<\/strong>, and then on the Tools<\/strong> menu, click Folder Options<\/strong>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
b.<\/td>\nClick the View<\/strong> tab.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
c.<\/td>\nUnder Advanced settings<\/strong>, select the Show hidden files and folders<\/strong> check box.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
d.<\/td>\nClear the Hide extensions for known file types<\/strong> check box.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
e.<\/td>\nClick OK<\/strong>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
<\/td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
2.<\/td>\nIn the C:\\Windows\\Inf<\/strong> folder, right-click the Mdac.inf<\/strong> file, and then click Install<\/strong>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
3.<\/td>\nWhen you are prompted to insert the Windows XP SP2 CD, use one of the following methods:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
<\/td>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
I. If you have a Windows XP SP2<\/strong> CD:<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
a.<\/td>\nInsert the Windows XP Service Pack 2 CD<\/strong> in the CD or DVD drive.
\nNote<\/strong> If a “Welcome to Microsoft Windows XP” message appears, click Exit<\/strong>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
b.<\/td>\nClick Browse<\/strong>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
c.<\/td>\nIn the File name<\/strong> box, type CD or DVD drive that contains the Windows XP Service Pack 2 CD drive letter<\/var>:\\i386. For example, type d:\\i386 if the Windows XP Service Pack 2 CD is in drive D.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
d.<\/td>\nClick Open<\/strong>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

II. If you do not<\/strong> have a Windows XP SP2\/SP3 CD:<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
a.<\/td>\nIn the File name<\/strong> box, type %systemroot%\\windows\\servicepackfiles\\i386, and then click Open<\/strong>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
b.<\/td>\nWhen prompted for adcjavas.inc<\/strong>, point to C:\\Windows\\servicepackfiles\\i386
\n<\/strong>Note: <\/span>If you cannot find this folder, put the Windows CD into your CD drive and browse for that file.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
c.<\/td>\nWhen prompted for the file handler.reg<\/strong>, either point to C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\System\\msadc<\/strong>, or put the Windows XP CD in your CD-ROM drive.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
d.<\/td>\nWhen prompted for MDACRdMe.htm<\/strong>, point to C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\System\\Ado<\/strong>. If this file is not present, rename the file MDACReadme.htm to MDACRdMe.htm.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
e.<\/td>\nWhen prompted for oledbjvs.inc<\/strong>, point to C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\System\\Ole DB<\/strong>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
f.<\/td>\nWhen prompted for mssoap1.dll<\/strong>, point to C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\MSSoap\\Binaries<\/strong>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
