If you try to install MDAC <em>2.8<\/em>, which is the latest available standalone download of MDAC, you will receive a message that you already have a newer version of MDAC installed. Therefore, under Windows XP SP2\/SP3, you must manually repair MDAC 2.81 as outlined below.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>How to Repair MDAC 2.81 under Windows XP with SP2 or SP3<\/h3>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">1.<\/td>\n<td>In Windows Explorer, open the c:\\Windows\\Inf folder.<strong>Note<\/strong>If you cannot see the c:\\Windows\\Inf folder, follow these steps:<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>a.<\/td>\n<td>On the desktop, double-click <strong>My Computer<\/strong>, and then on the <strong>Tools<\/strong> menu, click <strong>Folder Options<\/strong>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>b.<\/td>\n<td>Click the <strong>View<\/strong> tab.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>c.<\/td>\n<td>Under <strong>Advanced settings<\/strong>, select the <strong>Show hidden files and folders<\/strong> check box.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>d.<\/td>\n<td>Clear the <strong>Hide extensions for known file types<\/strong> check box.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>e.<\/td>\n<td>Click <strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><\/td>\n<td><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">2.<\/td>\n<td>In the <strong>C:\\Windows\\Inf<\/strong> folder, right-click the <strong>Mdac.inf<\/strong> file, and then click <strong>Install<\/strong>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">3.<\/td>\n<td>When you are prompted to insert the Windows XP SP2 CD, use one of the following methods:<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\"><\/td>\n<td>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\" valign=\"top\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">I. If you have a Windows XP <strong>SP2<\/strong> CD:<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">a.<\/td>\n<td>Insert the <strong>Windows XP Service Pack 2 CD<\/strong> in the CD or DVD drive.<br \/>\n<strong>Note<\/strong> If a &#8220;Welcome to Microsoft Windows XP&#8221; message appears, click <strong>Exit<\/strong>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">b.<\/td>\n<td>Click <strong>Browse<\/strong>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">c.<\/td>\n<td>In the <strong>File name<\/strong> box, type <var>CD or DVD drive that contains the Windows XP Service Pack 2 CD drive letter<\/var>:\\i386. For example, type d:\\i386 if the Windows XP Service Pack 2 CD is in drive D.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">d.<\/td>\n<td>Click <strong>Open<\/strong>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\"><\/td>\n<td>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\" valign=\"top\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">II. If you do <strong>not<\/strong> have a Windows XP SP2\/SP3 CD:<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">a.<\/td>\n<td>In the <strong>File name<\/strong> box, type %systemroot%\\windows\\servicepackfiles\\i386, and then click <strong>Open<\/strong>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">b.<\/td>\n<td>When prompted for <strong>adcjavas.inc<\/strong>, point to <strong>C:\\Windows\\servicepackfiles\\i386<br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff3300;\">Note: <\/span>If you cannot find this folder, put the Windows CD into your CD drive and browse for that file.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">c.<\/td>\n<td>When prompted for the file <strong>handler.reg<\/strong>, either point to <strong> C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\System\\msadc<\/strong>, or put the Windows XP CD in your CD-ROM drive.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">d.<\/td>\n<td>When prompted for <strong>MDACRdMe.htm<\/strong>, point to <strong>C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\System\\Ado<\/strong>.
